WEBVTT 00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:10.240 we're going to be going through all the different  components of financial aid this evening   00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:14.560 and our learning objectives tonight are for  you to understand the financial aid process   00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:18.720 here at UIC identify the different  types of financial aid that we offer   00:00:18.720 --> 00:00:22.880 and also how to understand and read  your financial aid award notification   00:00:22.880 --> 00:00:26.800 as well as next steps what you can do from here  once you've received your award notification   00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:33.680 so let's talk about the financial aid process so  first and foremost comes the application stage so   00:00:33.680 --> 00:00:38.880 there are two ways to apply for financial aid at  UIC the first is the fafsa this is known as the   00:00:38.880 --> 00:00:44.240 free application for federal student aid and you  can apply for that every year on october 1st so   00:00:44.240 --> 00:00:49.520 the 22 23 award year is the current basketball  that we're using and that became available   00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:55.520 on october 1st of 2021 and again this is not  a form filed once like your application for   00:00:55.520 --> 00:01:00.560 admission this is something that you would  have to file every year so every october 1st   00:01:00.560 --> 00:01:05.440 you want to set a reminder on your calendar to  file your fafsa for that particular upcoming year   00:01:06.800 --> 00:01:10.880 also here in the state of illinois we have the  alternative application for illinois financial   00:01:10.880 --> 00:01:15.840 aid so this is now available as well this also  becomes available october 1st of every year   00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:21.040 this application is specific to students who  are ineligible to file for federal financial aid   00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:26.560 so it includes undocumented students as well as  transgender students though again are unable to   00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:31.280 fill out the federal application this is the  alternative application and it's what another   00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:36.160 option for students in those categories to receive  financial aid from the state of illinois as well   00:01:36.160 --> 00:01:42.320 as from uic now please note you do not need to  file both you only need to file one or the other   00:01:42.320 --> 00:01:46.800 so for those students who are eligible to file  the fafsa that is the application that you want to   00:01:46.800 --> 00:01:52.560 file and for those who are ineligible to file the  fafsa who meet the criteria of these categories   00:01:52.560 --> 00:01:57.360 this is the application that you would want to  file and again both applications need to be filed   00:01:57.360 --> 00:02:04.400 each year and both applications are available on  october 1st of the year before that fall semester   00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:12.640 so let's talk about the fafsa so the 2223 fafsa  and what it does so the fafsa basically takes   00:02:12.640 --> 00:02:18.400 on components from your income information  and other data primarily based on tax   00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:23.200 returns and other information that you provide  takes into consideration your family size and   00:02:23.200 --> 00:02:27.920 the number in college and it computes what's  called the expected family contribution now   00:02:27.920 --> 00:02:32.880 we love using acronyms and financially and this  is the first one it's called the efc that you're   00:02:32.880 --> 00:02:38.160 going to come across well i suppose the second one  fast would be first efc would be second um so the   00:02:38.160 --> 00:02:42.480 efc is going to be something we talked about a  little bit more today because the efc is one of   00:02:42.480 --> 00:02:46.960 those main determining factors for what kinds of  financial aid that you could be considered for   00:02:48.160 --> 00:02:54.640 so again let's break down what the efc is so again  it's calculated using data that you would provide   00:02:54.640 --> 00:03:01.200 on the fafsa also please note that the alternative  application also calculates an efc it uses a very   00:03:01.200 --> 00:03:07.520 similar methodology to the fafsa in terms of  calculating that contribution so the efc is on   00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:13.120 both forms on the fafsa application as well as  the state alternative application so it stays   00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:18.640 the same this information stays the same no matter  what college you're applying to so your efc at uic   00:03:18.640 --> 00:03:22.640 is going to be similar or the same at other  institutions through which you're applying   00:03:22.640 --> 00:03:27.520 um for financial aid and there are two components  that take up that combine to make the efc   00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:31.760 one is the student contribution and  the other is a parent contribution   00:03:31.760 --> 00:03:36.480 in a lot of cases a lot of times um families  believe that only the parent information   00:03:36.480 --> 00:03:40.720 is used to calculate the contribution  level but in fact the student contribution   00:03:40.720 --> 00:03:49.440 is used as well so it's both uh both contributions  combined to make the efc so why that is important   00:03:49.440 --> 00:03:53.200 is we use that number to calculate what's  called a financial need determination   00:03:53.840 --> 00:03:57.920 so there are two major factors in that one is the  cost of attendance which we will talk about in   00:03:57.920 --> 00:04:04.800 detail a little bit further on in the presentation  minus your efc and that equals your financial need   00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:11.600 now let's talk about cost of attendance so cost  of attendance is composed of two major categories   00:04:11.600 --> 00:04:17.200 the first is direct costs these are costs that  you can be expected to um to pay directly to the   00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:22.480 university and it can be tuition mandatory fees  and resident hall expenses or dorm costs if you   00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:28.080 choose to live in the residence halls now indirect  costs are those that we know you're going to need   00:04:28.080 --> 00:04:32.800 while you are attending uic but they're not costs  that we determine they're costs that you would   00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:37.600 determine based on your particular circumstances  and those can be books and supplies that's really   00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:41.520 based on your program and the coursework that  you're taking transportation whether you plan   00:04:41.520 --> 00:04:46.960 to use the u-pass while you're here or if you  plan to commute or if you plan to live off campus   00:04:46.960 --> 00:04:52.000 plan to take the pace et cetera et cetera as well  as other personal expenses such as laundry costs   00:04:52.640 --> 00:04:58.080 dry cleaning medical costs that aren't covered  by insurance things of that nature all of those   00:04:58.080 --> 00:05:06.080 components go into calculating the coa or cost  of attendance so while the efc is going to be   00:05:06.080 --> 00:05:11.120 the same at every school that you apply to the  cost of attendance is definitely going to vary   00:05:11.120 --> 00:05:18.320 based on the school that you're attending so as  an example in terms of how need is calculated so   00:05:18.320 --> 00:05:24.720 let's just say the cost of attendance for you is  twenty four thousand five hundred dollars the efc   00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:29.920 as calculated by the fafsa or the alternative app  is five hundred dollars that would leave you with   00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:37.120 twenty four thousand dollars of unmet financial  need or gross financial need so now that we've   00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:42.640 determined um kind of how uh financial aid is  is based in terms of how we determine financial   00:05:42.640 --> 00:05:47.680 need and the overriding principles of financial  aid be it cost attendance and expected family   00:05:47.680 --> 00:05:53.200 contribution now let's talk about the types of  financial aid and how those two factors impact   00:05:53.200 --> 00:05:59.920 the types of financial aid that you might receive  so there are four major categories there's grants   00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:05.280 scholarships or waivers and those go into gift aid  what we call gift aid programs and then the others   00:06:05.280 --> 00:06:10.720 are loans and student employment such as federal  work study that's what we consider self-help aid   00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:16.240 so let's talk about gift date and what  we mean by that so grants so typically   00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:21.280 uh grants require the fafsa or the state  application so they're normally based on some form   00:06:21.280 --> 00:06:25.920 of financial need grants typically come from the  federal state government or they can come from the   00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:32.480 academic institution some institutions like we do  here at uic have a need-based grant program that   00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:38.160 kind of um that is primarily based and coupled  with the federal and the state programs that we're   00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:43.600 able to offer here so um so that is how grant  programs typically work they're normally based   00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:49.200 on some type of need based factor now the other  major gift is scholarships or waivers now these   00:06:49.200 --> 00:06:55.120 can be based on other factors such as talent  affiliation uh academic merit and sometimes   00:06:55.120 --> 00:07:01.360 need is a component here but generally speaking um  need is normally not the major determining factor   00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:06.320 so talent affiliation academic those tend to  be tend to be the overriding factors when it   00:07:06.320 --> 00:07:11.440 comes to scholarships and waivers sometimes these  programs will also require a separate application   00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:17.680 so scholarships again because it's gift date  this is money that you would not have to pay   00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:22.080 back so um so that's one of the major  major differences between self-help   00:07:22.080 --> 00:07:26.000 and gift aid is typically scholarships  like gift date you do not need to pay back   00:07:26.960 --> 00:07:31.600 so sources of scholarships again colleges  and universities private organizations also   00:07:31.600 --> 00:07:38.000 offer scholarships as well so for first-year  students here at uic most of our scholarships   00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:43.600 are determined through the admissions application  or by the college in which you are applying for so   00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:48.240 each area selects their own particular recipients  and they will notify you of the scholarship   00:07:48.880 --> 00:07:53.520 usually you will receive that notification  before we receive it in financial aid for the   00:07:53.520 --> 00:07:58.800 colleges and the admissions team they definitely  notify us at that point once were notified then   00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:04.000 we would add the scholarship information to  your award notification now in many cases   00:08:04.720 --> 00:08:10.240 we try very very hard to work with our college  partners here at uic to get that information   00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:13.680 to you right away so that when you get  your award notification the first time   00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:18.480 which many of you have received already you will  have your scholarship information already on there   00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:24.240 so but that's kind of how that process works here  at uic the scholarships are determined typically   00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:29.680 by the admissions process either by the admissions  office itself or through your college that you're   00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:34.640 replying to they notify us and then we would  add that information to your award notification 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:41.280 so external scholarships um there are many  different types of external scholarships out there   00:08:41.280 --> 00:08:45.840 so we recommend we encourage you to search for  those different types of scholarships and then   00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:50.080 apply um some can be very competitive but  we definitely recommend that you still give   00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:54.960 yourself an opportunity to apply and then maintain  make sure you know and fulfill the requirements   00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:59.280 for each scholarship some scholarships all they  need is an application other scholarships they   00:08:59.280 --> 00:09:05.440 might need some form of information from you  such as a copy of your high school transcript   00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:10.000 sometimes they require an essay or sometimes  they even require references so it's   00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:13.280 important to keep note of all the different  requirements for each scholarship program   00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:18.400 to which you're applying to make sure you have  a complete application for when you apply such   00:09:18.400 --> 00:09:25.440 that that agency can absolutely consider you for  the opportunity so here are some helpful tools we   00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:31.360 have a scholarships webpage here at uic also fast  web that is one of the largest if not the largest   00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:37.200 general scholarship search um in the united states  and scholarships.com now one thing to keep in mind   00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:42.800 that makes all three of these uh websites um  distinct is that they are free so we want to   00:09:42.800 --> 00:09:46.160 make sure that you exercise a little bit  of caution when you're going through a   00:09:46.160 --> 00:09:51.280 scholarship search we generally recommend  staying away from any scholarship search   00:09:51.280 --> 00:09:56.320 that asks you for money up front or ask you  to pay to be considered for scholarships   00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:02.640 most of the scholarships out there because it's  gift aid most are non-profit or organizations in   00:10:02.640 --> 00:10:06.640 that they wish to give out money as opposed  to take it in so you want to be mindful of   00:10:06.640 --> 00:10:10.480 that and always we are here to help if you have a  scholarship that you're looking at that you're not   00:10:10.480 --> 00:10:14.880 really sure if it's on the up and up and you would  like a next set of eyes please don't hesitate to   00:10:14.880 --> 00:10:18.720 contact us we'd be more than happy to look into  that for you as well and kind of give you our   00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:24.800 opinion um most the scholarship agencies that we  work with again um are free so that's something to   00:10:24.800 --> 00:10:28.800 to really consider when you're looking for  scholarship opportunities external to uic   00:10:30.320 --> 00:10:35.280 so now let's talk about self-help aid so self-help  aid there are two major programs here uh one is a   00:10:35.280 --> 00:10:40.480 federal work study program and this pay is funded  primarily by the federal government for on-campus   00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:47.680 jobs and you need to have that need factor  that we talked about earlier that coa minus efc   00:10:47.680 --> 00:10:54.320 equals need so that is one of the major um uh  programs that we offer oops there we go okay   00:10:54.320 --> 00:10:59.840 and the other air loans so loans um again are  self-help but loans generally mean that you need   00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:04.960 to pay back so they must be repaid in full and  sometimes with interest after you leave school   00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:09.600 so these can come from the federal government or  private sources um the loans that we offer here on   00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:14.720 your award notifications generally are going to  be federal loans so let's talk a bit more about   00:11:14.720 --> 00:11:20.000 federal loans so there are two major types of  federal loans the first is a subsidized loan   00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:25.360 so that is a need-based loan so you have to have  that determined need as we talked about earlier no   00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:28.960 interest will accrue on this loan while you're  in school so it is what we call a subsidized   00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:33.120 where the government actually subsidizes  the interest for you while you're in school   00:11:33.840 --> 00:11:38.400 so there's another type unsubsidized this is a  non-need-based loan so you do not have to have any   00:11:38.400 --> 00:11:42.960 demonstrated need to be considered for this type  of loan both are federally backed they're both   00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:48.160 through the direct loan program however on this  loan interest does begin to accrue immediately   00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:56.160 now the current interest rate for both loans is  set at 3.73 and i will say um his one note um   00:11:56.160 --> 00:12:02.400 currently because of the the covet pandemic um  there is no interest currently occurring on loans   00:12:02.400 --> 00:12:10.080 all loans have an interest rate of zero percent um  however um that uh that provision is set to expire   00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:18.400 on may 1st of 2022 so this upcoming may there is  a lot of support um for the biden and expiration   00:12:18.400 --> 00:12:25.280 to extend um to extend that beyond may 1st to 2022  but we don't have that clarity right now so just   00:12:25.280 --> 00:12:31.440 in the interest of full disclosure the interest  rate is 3.73 percent but because of the cova   00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:39.040 pandemic it is current it's actually zero um but  if that extension is not um it's not approved um   00:12:39.040 --> 00:12:46.240 uh from the zero percent where it currently is it  will be 3.73 um on on both of those loans now both   00:12:46.240 --> 00:12:51.680 loans are what we call deferred loans that means  payments are not required while you are in school   00:12:51.680 --> 00:12:55.520 now that doesn't mean you can't pay while you're  in school if you choose to the government will   00:12:55.520 --> 00:13:00.240 take your money they will allow you to pay there's  no prepayment penalty it's not that if you begin   00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:04.800 to pay your interest will begin to improve there's  no prepayment penalty at all but you don't have to   00:13:04.800 --> 00:13:09.840 repayment will begin however six months after  you leave school and that could be if you leave   00:13:09.840 --> 00:13:16.640 school for any other reason than graduation or if  you graduate right so these are the annual loan   00:13:16.640 --> 00:13:22.240 limits for unsubsidized and subsidized stafford  loans and it's based on on your year in school 00:13:25.200 --> 00:13:31.600 so also with that in mind on top of subsidizing  unsubsidized stafford loans the government does   00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:36.720 also offer an option for parents to borrow  from them for their undergraduate student   00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:41.440 it's called the parent plus loan this is a  separate application process where parents   00:13:41.440 --> 00:13:45.120 would need to apply because it is based  on credits so there is a credit decision   00:13:45.760 --> 00:13:51.840 if you choose to uh to apply for a plus loan for  your student the current fixed interest rate is   00:13:51.840 --> 00:13:56.800 six point two eight percent on that loan again  kind of the same disclosure as before they're   00:13:56.800 --> 00:14:02.480 currently set to zero percent we hope it gets  extended um if it doesn't this is the actual   00:14:02.480 --> 00:14:07.360 uh currently set interest rate that's currently  at zero percent because of the covet pandemic   00:14:07.360 --> 00:14:11.520 now the difference between this loan and the  other two loans i just spoke about is the parent   00:14:11.520 --> 00:14:17.360 is actually responsible for a payment on this but  similar to subsidized unsubsidized loans repayment   00:14:17.360 --> 00:14:22.560 can still be deferred while your student is still  in school and again this is contingent upon credit   00:14:24.480 --> 00:14:29.280 okay so those are the major aid programs so  now let's talk about the financial aid award   00:14:29.280 --> 00:14:34.000 notification which is where you're going to see  all the eight programs that you are eligible to   00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:41.040 receive for attending uic so we primarily provide  an award notification that looks very much like   00:14:41.040 --> 00:14:46.640 this so let's break it down so this is what if  you access your award notification electronically   00:14:46.640 --> 00:14:50.560 this is what you will see not necessarily  in this format but we broke it down so you   00:14:50.560 --> 00:14:54.480 can read it a little easily so um the first  thing you're going to want to take a look at   00:14:54.480 --> 00:14:57.840 on your award notification is what we call the  cost of attendance what we talked about before   00:14:58.560 --> 00:15:04.240 we do separate this out from direct costs and  indirect costs so the direct costs are going to be   00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:09.280 what we call the costs charged by the university  now this is based upon determining what you're   00:15:09.280 --> 00:15:15.200 entering so follow 22 and also can be determined  based on the major that you're in um some majors   00:15:15.200 --> 00:15:20.400 here at uic will have what's called a differential  which is a little extra tuition charge because of   00:15:20.400 --> 00:15:25.040 uh the nature of that particular program we also  include in here your mandatory fees so these are   00:15:25.040 --> 00:15:30.720 the fees that are assessed to the university uh  one thing to note this does include campus care   00:15:30.720 --> 00:15:33.200 insurance now talk a little bit more  about campus care in a little bit   00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:38.560 but campus care is automatically charged to all  incoming students but you can wait out of it   00:15:39.360 --> 00:15:44.480 i will note oh well this also does not include  currently the upax we put that into indirect   00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:48.960 costs um the upass we're still kind of  determining whether or not that's going   00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:54.080 to be directly assessed to you or if you can opt  into it so there'll be more to come from from us   00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:59.040 on that um as we get closer to the beginning of  the fall semester but we do account for the upass   00:15:59.040 --> 00:16:03.520 in your cost of attendance it is definitely  there um so again so that's your direct cost   00:16:03.520 --> 00:16:07.280 of the university so the next box here  is what we call your indirect cost again   00:16:07.280 --> 00:16:12.320 those are the variable expenses so those are the  expenses that we're not certain of but we know   00:16:12.320 --> 00:16:17.600 you're going to have now we do look at a lot  of data when we put this together we look at   00:16:17.600 --> 00:16:23.200 the average cost of housing in the city of chicago  we look at transportation expenses we also look at   00:16:23.200 --> 00:16:30.320 personal expenses in terms of you know the average  cost of dry cleaning um the toiletries things of   00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:36.160 that nature so that's so while they are variable  um we do take a look and we do a general survey   00:16:36.160 --> 00:16:41.440 every year to determine do those costs make sense  for your student to live in the city of chicago   00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:46.400 so after you look at the cost of attendance  probably the next most important part if not the   00:16:46.400 --> 00:16:51.200 most important part is your financial aid summary  and this is the information of the aid that you   00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:57.120 are offered by uic now please note this is the  aid that you are offered at uic so this is where   00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:00.960 you would want to compare this to other aid  that you're offered from other institutions   00:17:01.520 --> 00:17:05.680 some aid you're going to see the same  no matter what institution you go to   00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:11.120 in particular the federal pell grant that grant  is based specifically on your expected family   00:17:11.120 --> 00:17:15.520 contribution and that will be the same  at each institution to which you apply   00:17:15.520 --> 00:17:20.080 now if you are in the state of illinois and you  are eligible for the map grant that is specific   00:17:20.080 --> 00:17:24.240 to illinois schools so if you're applying to  a school that is not in the state of illinois   00:17:25.040 --> 00:17:29.840 the map grant would not be applicable there the  uic opportunity grant listed here and the pap the   00:17:29.840 --> 00:17:35.680 president's award program those are institutional  based programs and also we always offer loans to   00:17:35.680 --> 00:17:40.400 those who are eligible as you can see here we've  offered the subsidized loan and the unsubsidized   00:17:40.400 --> 00:17:48.160 loan in this example so there are several criteria  that affect your financial aid the grade level um   00:17:48.160 --> 00:17:51.840 definitely impacts the amount of loans that you're  going to be borrowed the credits that you intend   00:17:51.840 --> 00:17:56.960 to enroll will impact your grant eligibility and  again that expected family contribution where you   00:17:56.960 --> 00:18:00.800 will file that and find that information  is in what we call the student profile   00:18:00.800 --> 00:18:04.640 so you want to take a look at your student profile  on your notification to make sure all that makes   00:18:04.640 --> 00:18:10.720 sense to you the one thing to note is your  housing we automatically budget all students   00:18:10.720 --> 00:18:17.120 at uic as not living with your parents um we do  that for a number of reasons um if you decide to   00:18:17.120 --> 00:18:21.680 live with your parents that's okay there's no  need for you to notify us of that okay there's   00:18:21.680 --> 00:18:25.760 that's that's not a requirement for you to say  wait i do plan to live with my parents it's   00:18:25.760 --> 00:18:31.120 absolutely fine no need for you to notify us  if you plan if you set on your fafsa i plan to   00:18:31.120 --> 00:18:35.840 live off campus but now i think i want to live in  the dorms do you want also do not need to notify   00:18:35.840 --> 00:18:40.320 us of that our residence halls do communicate  to our office so we will know if you have an   00:18:40.320 --> 00:18:46.240 application on file so no need for you to notice  to live on campus i'm sorry was there a question 00:18:49.440 --> 00:18:54.400 okay um uh we can take questions at the end if  that's okay for everybody i see there's already   00:18:54.400 --> 00:18:59.120 a few questions and so um we'll get to those  at the end and then also we will have breakout   00:18:59.120 --> 00:19:02.320 sessions with financial aid administrators so  you can speak with us one-on-one for your own   00:19:02.320 --> 00:19:09.200 specific circumstances so so again so this is the  criteria under which the student profile all right   00:19:09.200 --> 00:19:15.440 so financial aid summary so here is where you  will see both gift aid and self help aid if you   00:19:15.440 --> 00:19:22.400 do not need your self-help aid that is okay just  because we have awarded you with loans you do not   00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:28.080 need to accept them but i will say gift aid we  automatically accept for you so there's nothing   00:19:28.080 --> 00:19:33.520 else you need to do to accept your federal pell  grant state grant or any other type of gift date   00:19:33.520 --> 00:19:38.000 we automatically assume you're going to want your  free money so there's nothing else you need to do   00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:42.480 to accept that whereas loans that is a different  story and the same with federal work study   00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:47.600 so again this is where you will  see um kind of how we break down   00:19:48.320 --> 00:19:51.760 the for the steps in terms of identifying your  costs so the first thing you're going to want to   00:19:51.760 --> 00:19:57.200 do is you're going to want to identify your oops  i moved a little further ahead let's go back there   00:19:57.200 --> 00:20:01.440 you want to identify your direct cost to  university from there you're going to take a   00:20:01.440 --> 00:20:07.600 look at what kind of gift date or the free money  that you're going to get so in this scenario   00:20:07.600 --> 00:20:13.840 this is how you determine how much you need to  pay your direct cost uic and in this scenario   00:20:13.840 --> 00:20:20.320 this particular student is receiving more  gift aid than their actual direct costs at uic   00:20:20.320 --> 00:20:25.680 and just so you know we would not reduce your gift  date in this scenario we assume that you're going   00:20:25.680 --> 00:20:30.320 to need that because as we showed before you  have all those indirect costs right you have   00:20:30.320 --> 00:20:34.880 potentially rent that you're going to need to pay  or you are helping your parents with that month's   00:20:34.880 --> 00:20:39.840 cable bill and so you're going to need help to  support your family or yourself um above and   00:20:39.840 --> 00:20:45.680 beyond your direct cost so in this scenario this  student is going to expect to receive about 5800   00:20:45.680 --> 00:20:51.520 from uic for the fall and spring semester to  assist them with their additional living costs   00:20:51.520 --> 00:20:57.440 so again just because you're receiving gift aid  in excess of your direct costs at uic we will that   00:20:57.440 --> 00:21:02.960 does not mean we will reduce your gift aid only to  your direct cost now there are some programs that   00:21:02.960 --> 00:21:08.080 are specific to tuition and fees but generally  speaking we will notify you if that is the case   00:21:09.680 --> 00:21:14.080 so again at this point now you've made that  determination the next thing you want to look   00:21:14.080 --> 00:21:19.120 at is do you need other additional resources  and that's where you want to look at your loan   00:21:19.120 --> 00:21:24.880 eligibility we also and again as i mentioned we  will always have this offered for you until you   00:21:24.880 --> 00:21:31.360 tell us otherwise nothing happens here so do  not worry about seeing these loans at offered   00:21:31.360 --> 00:21:36.320 we do not pay the loan without your consent we  do not let the we do not even tell the federal   00:21:36.320 --> 00:21:40.880 government that you're eligible for it until  you let us know you want it this is only an   00:21:40.880 --> 00:21:47.520 offer so it doesn't become real until you actually  accept the loan and then complete two other steps   00:21:47.520 --> 00:21:53.840 that we'll talk about in just a minute okay  so here's some commonly asked questions why   00:21:53.840 --> 00:21:57.760 haven't i received my financial identification  so let's talk about what that could be the case   00:21:57.760 --> 00:22:02.880 so i want to familiarize yourself with you with  a student portal so the uic student portal is   00:22:02.880 --> 00:22:09.440 myuic.edu this is where you will find the central  repository for all of your financial information   00:22:10.080 --> 00:22:15.760 so there's one takeaway from tonight i hope it's  this is the student portal is your friend it   00:22:15.760 --> 00:22:20.880 is where all of your information is stored it's  also where we communicate with you so if we need   00:22:20.880 --> 00:22:25.360 anything from you or if you need something  from us this is where you can communicate   00:22:25.360 --> 00:22:30.960 that information and we can also communicate back  to you so again you want to log in the portal and   00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:36.640 you want to click on the financial aid tab and  student requirements i want to highlight this   00:22:36.640 --> 00:22:41.280 section because generally speaking if you have  not received your award notification from us   00:22:41.840 --> 00:22:45.360 it's because we need something  there's something that we have to do   00:22:45.360 --> 00:22:50.720 or some information that we need from you before  we can process your financial aid in some cases   00:22:50.720 --> 00:22:55.040 there was something on the fafsa that the  government says we'd like you to confirm that   00:22:55.040 --> 00:23:00.480 that happens a lot of times and that's where we  communicate hey could you please provide this data   00:23:00.480 --> 00:23:05.280 and once you provide that to you we'd be able  to get an award notification for you so again   00:23:05.280 --> 00:23:10.240 if you have not received your awarded vacation  you think you should have please go to the portal   00:23:10.240 --> 00:23:14.960 and check this tab so this is what you'll  see so here's a good case in point you will   00:23:14.960 --> 00:23:20.160 see a document here and you see this particular  document highlighted in blue in this case it's   00:23:20.160 --> 00:23:24.000 the dependent verification worksheet talk about  verification just a minute what that actually   00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:28.720 means and you'll see the status as required if  there's something here that stated as required   00:23:29.360 --> 00:23:34.080 generally speaking it means you got to give it to  us in order for us to process your financial aid   00:23:34.080 --> 00:23:38.400 so that tab is really important so so for  that question for some reason you haven't   00:23:38.400 --> 00:23:42.880 gotten your word notification please go  to your portal and check that tab to see   00:23:42.880 --> 00:23:46.880 if there's missing information and that's why  we haven't been able to provide that for you   00:23:48.640 --> 00:23:54.400 okay so let's talk about verification so  verification is a process required by the federal   00:23:54.400 --> 00:24:00.160 government um and it only applies to fafsa it does  not yet apply to the alternative application for   00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:05.520 illinois aid so not yet but we're hearing terms  that it might in the future so i'm not saying   00:24:05.520 --> 00:24:09.840 it's never going to be there but right now it's  not so right now this only applies for the fafsa   00:24:09.840 --> 00:24:15.920 so approximately 35 to 40 of our applications here  at uic are selected for this process and it is a   00:24:15.920 --> 00:24:20.880 random selection it is not our selection it is  the department of education selection so this   00:24:20.880 --> 00:24:26.080 is another thing to keep in mind if you're  selected here at uic there's a 90 chance   00:24:26.080 --> 00:24:30.880 that you will be selected at each university  that you are applying to so keep that in mind   00:24:30.880 --> 00:24:36.560 the verification it's not a uic thing it's a fafsa  thing so it's determined based on your fafsa and   00:24:36.560 --> 00:24:41.120 again it's a random selection by the department  of education we don't really get a say in it but   00:24:41.760 --> 00:24:45.840 we are required to do it in order to offer you  financial aid and essentially what it's doing   00:24:45.840 --> 00:24:51.120 is just confirming the accuracy of the information  on the fafsa and again it is mandatory so we don't   00:24:51.120 --> 00:24:56.640 have a choice here in financial aid believe  me if we did we would not we would not put   00:24:56.640 --> 00:25:02.160 you through it um but it is mandatory for us it  can take several weeks to process just because   00:25:02.160 --> 00:25:07.600 of the volume of applications that we we do have  that are selected here at uic as well as um the   00:25:07.600 --> 00:25:12.080 number of items on the fast that we're required  to check so so just please keep that in mind so if   00:25:12.080 --> 00:25:17.280 you're selected it will show on the student portal  similar to the last screen that we just looked at   00:25:18.640 --> 00:25:23.040 okay so this is what your award notification  looks like in full so when you go to the portal   00:25:23.040 --> 00:25:27.040 this is what it all looks like so again earlier  in the presentation we kind of broke it down   00:25:27.040 --> 00:25:31.120 but this is what your note notification looks  like so you've got your cost of attendance up   00:25:31.120 --> 00:25:34.880 in the upper left hand side your student  profile and then at the very bottom you have   00:25:34.880 --> 00:25:41.840 your aid summary broken out with gift date  on top and self have made right below that 00:25:42.800 --> 00:25:47.120 okay one more thing i want to talk about you'll  notice in the loans we did not put in there the   00:25:47.120 --> 00:25:51.040 parent plus that is why we put the parent we  that this is where we put the parent plus so   00:25:51.040 --> 00:25:55.520 the parent plus is actually in the text below  and we do that because it's truly optional um   00:25:55.520 --> 00:26:00.080 it's up to you it's not a student award it is a  parent award so that's why we include down here   00:26:00.080 --> 00:26:04.800 but we do calculate for all of our dependent  students who are eligible for a parent plus loan   00:26:04.800 --> 00:26:09.280 how much you have to borrow or have access to  borrow that doesn't mean you have to borrow   00:26:09.280 --> 00:26:13.280 that amount doesn't mean you have to borrow  it at all it just means that it's there for   00:26:13.280 --> 00:26:18.320 your information if you choose to seek that  option to finance your students education here   00:26:20.320 --> 00:26:27.120 okay so changes to your fafsa so here's the thing  the 2223 fafsa information it's based on 2022   00:26:27.120 --> 00:26:34.320 which i'm sorry 2020 information and as i'm sure  we are all pretty much aware the last few years   00:26:34.320 --> 00:26:40.560 have been pretty crazy uh for most of us so um  because of that you can make changes to your fafsa   00:26:40.560 --> 00:26:45.680 application however to do so you need to work  with us it's what we call a change of financial   00:26:45.680 --> 00:26:51.920 situation appeal so again this is how we have the  means to update the financial information that you   00:26:51.920 --> 00:26:58.880 provided in 2020 to your current circumstances so  what you can anticipate for the 2022 tax year so   00:26:58.880 --> 00:27:04.160 um so we will work with you on that if you do have  a change of financial situation please check this   00:27:04.160 --> 00:27:10.320 webs link here um it provides a lot of detail  on it we also include this link on every single   00:27:10.320 --> 00:27:15.520 award notification so it is in the text boxes  of every award notification that you receive as   00:27:15.520 --> 00:27:20.320 a link to this site as well so that you can let  us know and work with us if you've had changes to   00:27:20.320 --> 00:27:27.680 your financial situation from 2020 to now and we  know a lot of families are in that circumstance so   00:27:27.680 --> 00:27:34.400 um some quick tips for you if you um are selected  for verification and we need your tax returns one   00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:39.840 quick way to do that is to go into the fafsa and  use the irs data retrieval tool so it's an option   00:27:39.840 --> 00:27:43.360 for you if you haven't already done that and  you're selected for verification we recommend you   00:27:43.360 --> 00:27:49.200 do that it speeds up the process greatly so it'll  make it a much easier process for you because then   00:27:49.200 --> 00:27:54.400 we can just take your tax data and it saves a  lot of time with providing the tax materials   00:27:54.400 --> 00:27:59.120 to us and us going through that line by line to  determine if the information is in fact accurate 00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:06.960 okay so let's talk about next steps so next steps  from here first thing first thing you want to do   00:28:06.960 --> 00:28:12.000 when you get off the call oh and i jump jump jump  the line again here is you want to review your   00:28:12.000 --> 00:28:18.400 financial aid notification and again if you can't  access that check those student requirements and   00:28:18.400 --> 00:28:24.880 submit any remaining documentation you can as soon  as possible so again as we talked about uh before   00:28:24.880 --> 00:28:29.600 grants and scholarships there's no acceptance  required from you they automatically are accepted   00:28:29.600 --> 00:28:35.840 however if you do wish to determine in june of  2020 that is when you will be able to go online   00:28:36.400 --> 00:28:41.280 through your financial aid award notification  and accept your loans you can also at that point   00:28:41.280 --> 00:28:46.240 complete your master promissory note and your  entrance counseling those are federal requirements   00:28:46.240 --> 00:28:52.160 um so in order for us to pay your loan that you've  accepted you would have to complete those steps as   00:28:52.160 --> 00:28:56.720 well so those processes you can you can win master  promissory note now you can also complete your   00:28:56.720 --> 00:29:02.000 entrance counseling now but your loans you cannot  actually accept those at uic until june of 2020. 00:29:05.120 --> 00:29:10.320 okay um and so let's talk about billing and what  you can expect there so another thing that's   00:29:10.320 --> 00:29:15.120 important we kind of talked about this a little  bit in in this class of tenants section is you   00:29:15.120 --> 00:29:18.880 want to determine your health insurance if you  will need campus care or if you have insurance   00:29:18.880 --> 00:29:24.080 outside of uic if you have insurance outside of  uic you definitely want to check the campus care   00:29:24.080 --> 00:29:28.640 website because there are specific deadlines  in terms of when you can and cannot waive   00:29:28.640 --> 00:29:33.520 that particular fee if you missed a deadline you  could be subject to a rather large fee that you   00:29:33.520 --> 00:29:40.160 might not need also the first bill that you will  accept from uic is august 1st that's generally   00:29:40.160 --> 00:29:45.120 when we issue our first what we call assessment  or billing statement your bill is not due on   00:29:45.120 --> 00:29:50.400 august 1st the bills are not due until the end of  september september 28th so that gives you about   00:29:50.400 --> 00:29:56.800 two months to figure out how you can come cover um  those charges that you see on um on your billing   00:29:56.800 --> 00:30:01.840 statement that you would receive on august 1st  note financially we pay 10 days before the start   00:30:01.840 --> 00:30:07.200 of the semester however if all of your financial  aid is resolved and we can pay that for you we   00:30:07.200 --> 00:30:12.480 will have that for you on your statement you will  see that as um estimated or authorized financial   00:30:12.480 --> 00:30:17.680 aid on august 1st so that that will be there um  on that august 1st statement it won't actually pay   00:30:17.680 --> 00:30:21.840 until 10 days before the start of the semester  but you will be able to see that on that first   00:30:21.840 --> 00:30:27.360 assessment and again the key takeaway however is  your bill is still not due until september 28th 00:30:29.680 --> 00:30:33.600 okay so other next steps to keep in mind so i  want to point out the ferpa which is the family   00:30:33.600 --> 00:30:39.120 education privacy act so for those parents  um on the on the call today on the zoom today   00:30:39.120 --> 00:30:44.320 um we in the financial aid office and pretty  much anywhere at uic we cannot actually speak   00:30:44.320 --> 00:30:50.800 to you about your son or daughter or child's  financial aid information without their consent   00:30:50.800 --> 00:30:57.120 um once they are here their information is  protected however your student can file a release   00:30:57.120 --> 00:31:02.720 a ferpa release um it is not required so for the  students on the call please note we're not you're   00:31:02.720 --> 00:31:06.320 not required to file for it before your parent  it is entirely up to you but that's something   00:31:06.320 --> 00:31:11.440 you probably want to discuss um before you come  to campus so that we if you do want your parents   00:31:11.440 --> 00:31:15.040 having your access to your information assisting  you through the process you definitely want to   00:31:15.040 --> 00:31:18.080 make sure that that's filed if you're okay  to take care of everything on your own   00:31:18.080 --> 00:31:23.120 that's absolutely okay um but just please  note that and we would recommend that um you   00:31:23.120 --> 00:31:27.520 would this is the next step as well if you do  want to have a ferpa release that you get that   00:31:27.520 --> 00:31:34.160 filed as soon as possible with our registrar's  office okay so contacting us the financial aid   00:31:34.160 --> 00:31:39.520 office this is our link to the contact us page  um we have financial aid professionals on site   00:31:39.520 --> 00:31:44.400 um as well as remote to assist you we are open  in the student services building on campus   00:31:45.360 --> 00:31:50.400 30 to 5 pm every monday through friday the  people at our front desk are financially   00:31:50.400 --> 00:31:54.960 counselors so they are fully trained financially  counselors able to assist you with any question   00:31:54.960 --> 00:32:00.800 you might have on a walk-in basis i can tell you  we have been for obvious reasons relatively quiet   00:32:01.360 --> 00:32:06.080 when it comes to walk-in traffic so if you walk  in your wait time i guarantee you is going to be   00:32:06.080 --> 00:32:10.800 very very short um if you want to speak with  somebody so again we are open but we also   00:32:10.800 --> 00:32:15.120 um can do assist and zoom appointments and  we can also do in-person appointments as well   00:32:15.120 --> 00:32:18.880 if you'd prefer a more confidential  environment you just want to reach out   00:32:18.880 --> 00:32:24.640 to um to your assigned college mailbox and then  we will set you up with a counselor to work with   00:32:26.160 --> 00:32:34.560 okay so with this set we will do uh questions we  have time for about oh i'd say about five minutes   00:32:34.560 --> 00:32:39.280 of questions if that's okay with you beatrice and  maria from admissions and then we do have break   00:32:39.280 --> 00:32:45.360 it runs with financial aid professionals myself  included so if we don't get to your question um   00:32:45.360 --> 00:32:49.920 we will you will be able to to meet with a  professional now again um we do meet with   00:32:49.920 --> 00:32:56.160 people individually so i do apologize for the wait  um if you do have to wait to speak with somebody   00:32:56.160 --> 00:33:00.400 we will be here as long as you need us  to be here and again if for some reason   00:33:00.400 --> 00:33:05.840 um you can't wait or if you feel more comfortable  coming in and speaking to us in person please do   00:33:05.840 --> 00:33:11.920 again we're opening three to five corner of racine  harrison student services building room 1800   00:33:13.200 --> 00:33:15.680 all right so let's start with the questions 00:33:23.280 --> 00:33:28.640 okay uh first question do we need to apply for  the map grant or is that grant to determine   00:33:28.640 --> 00:33:32.800 when we file the fafsa you do not need  a separate application for the map grant   00:33:32.800 --> 00:33:38.720 the map grant is um is based off of the fafsa or  if you're ineligible to file the fafsa it is based   00:33:38.720 --> 00:33:44.240 off of the alternative application for illinois  aid so there is no additional application for the   00:33:44.240 --> 00:33:50.240 illinois map grant okay next question since  international students can't file the fafsa   00:33:50.240 --> 00:33:54.560 what aid can be given to international students  that's an excellent question generally speaking   00:33:54.560 --> 00:33:58.880 for international students most the aid that  international students can be considered for is   00:33:58.880 --> 00:34:04.720 what we call restricted aids that's aid that goes  towards tuition and fees now most international   00:34:04.720 --> 00:34:09.920 students are funded specifically either through  their college or through outside scholarships   00:34:09.920 --> 00:34:14.960 or through investment through their home country  so unfortunately we don't process a lot of   00:34:14.960 --> 00:34:19.280 financially for international students in this  office because of the ineligibility for fafsa or   00:34:19.280 --> 00:34:23.360 the alternative application but i would recommend  you reaching out to your college the college that   00:34:23.360 --> 00:34:27.040 you've been admitted to to see if they have  any other resources for international students 00:34:29.600 --> 00:34:34.000 okay there are only student loans  currently showing on my financial aid   00:34:34.000 --> 00:34:40.480 portal why is that okay so generally what you  want to look at is if you're only seeing loans   00:34:40.480 --> 00:34:45.760 you want to take a look at that efc  number so grants are based on that number   00:34:45.760 --> 00:34:52.880 and generally speaking if your efc is above 9000  if that calculates above 9000 generally you will   00:34:52.880 --> 00:34:57.600 not be eligible for grant aid so that's what that  means however if you have specific questions on   00:34:57.600 --> 00:35:03.680 your particular circumstance i'd encourage you  to wait um on the line and come and meet with us   00:35:03.680 --> 00:35:07.680 um after after our general session and we  can walk through your specific information 00:35:10.000 --> 00:35:15.040 oh one other thing i forgot to plug we will also  be here saturday so we will be open saturday if   00:35:15.040 --> 00:35:18.880 you're coming for ignite which i hope some  of you might be coming coming to see us in   00:35:18.880 --> 00:35:23.360 person here on campus our office will be open  we'll have a satellite location in the library   00:35:23.360 --> 00:35:28.160 and our office and ssb will also be open financial  aid counselors will be here to see you and we can   00:35:28.160 --> 00:35:33.440 take one-on-one walk-in appointments during that  time too all right next question how do we find   00:35:33.440 --> 00:35:37.680 out our direct cost of tuition housing it's  on that award notification so if you go to the   00:35:37.680 --> 00:35:43.280 award notification you will see your direct cost  for your tuition and and your mandatory fees now   00:35:43.280 --> 00:35:48.480 for housing see housing is a little different so  housing we have various types of residence halls   00:35:48.480 --> 00:35:52.880 here at uic so we estimate the amount that we  think you're going to need for university housing   00:35:52.880 --> 00:35:57.040 if you plan to live here for specific information  on housing we recommend that you actually go   00:35:57.040 --> 00:36:01.040 to the resident hall website itself and that  will give you the detailed housing breakdown 00:36:03.280 --> 00:36:10.320 all right um next question do you does uic offer  scholarships to cover full tuition something like   00:36:10.320 --> 00:36:15.920 the chancellor's scholarship yes in fact um we  do have some programs that offer full tuition   00:36:15.920 --> 00:36:21.120 um however most of our scholarships are what we  call stacked so they they they're not restricted   00:36:21.120 --> 00:36:25.680 if that makes sense so there are some programs  that say you can only pay for tuition you can only   00:36:25.680 --> 00:36:31.040 pay for fees or you can only pay for housing some  of our scholarships function that way but some of   00:36:31.040 --> 00:36:36.000 our scholarships don't some of our scholarships  can cover any component in your cost of attendance   00:36:36.000 --> 00:36:41.600 so it's not specific just to tuition so  so we do offer a plethora of scholarships   00:36:41.600 --> 00:36:45.680 you would see some of those already noted on  your award notification um and again if you have   00:36:45.680 --> 00:36:49.200 questions about your specific award notification  just let us know and we can help you with that   00:36:50.160 --> 00:36:53.840 okay i'll do two more questions and  then we will go to our breakout sessions   00:36:54.640 --> 00:36:58.960 okay how can i take out parts of the cost  of attendance for example transportation is   00:36:58.960 --> 00:37:05.600 something i'm beginning very simple just subtract  it so if we include 4 500 in transportation just   00:37:05.600 --> 00:37:09.520 subtract that from your overall cost of attendance  and then you don't have to worry about that cost 00:37:11.920 --> 00:37:20.240 and next um okay how do i change the housing  setting in the portal okay so we talked about   00:37:20.240 --> 00:37:25.680 this a little bit um you do not need to contact  us if you're changing your housing plans again   00:37:25.680 --> 00:37:30.480 we budget all students assuming that you're not  living with your parents if you opt to live with   00:37:30.480 --> 00:37:36.240 your parents it's absolutely fine um we just um we  just don't need to know so again kind of like we   00:37:36.240 --> 00:37:41.040 talked about with the transportation cost if that  cost doesn't apply to you just subtract it out   00:37:41.040 --> 00:37:44.800 just take that out of your cost of attendance and  you don't need to worry about it again you're not   00:37:44.800 --> 00:37:49.040 going to be charged for anything like that so the  indirect costs that's not something you're going   00:37:49.040 --> 00:37:52.960 to see on your bill okay so don't be concerned  about those indirect costs that's not something   00:37:52.960 --> 00:37:57.520 you're going to be charged for so all you would  need to do similar to transportation just take   00:37:57.520 --> 00:38:01.360 that out if you don't need it similar to housing  costs if you're going to be living at home with   00:38:01.360 --> 00:38:06.240 your family that's absolutely fine just subtract  that as well and you can keep shipping away   00:38:07.600 --> 00:38:13.760 okay we are approaching 5 45 um and so i  think that is time for our breakout rooms   00:38:13.760 --> 00:38:20.720 maria / beatrice if you could pop on in  that would be great to provide those breakouts   00:38:21.760 --> 00:38:27.440 yes so we are ready to transition over to the  breakout rooms if you would like to speak with   00:38:27.440 --> 00:38:32.640 representatives from the financial aid office  admissions the transfer assistance center or   00:38:32.640 --> 00:38:38.960 campus housing you can go ahead and join the  zoom link that i've just posted in the chat 00:38:41.440 --> 00:38:45.840 okay thanks everybody and i'll  see you in those breakouts
