WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en 00:00:03.680 --> 00:00:10.640 well thank you all for joining and joining us  tonight this evening we're excited to have you   00:00:10.640 --> 00:00:16.640 join us and to talk a little bit more about  some of the pre-health options at UIC we will   00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:27.280 let me go ahead so first off congratulations on  being admitted to UIC we're excited to potentially   00:00:27.280 --> 00:00:31.280 have you join us and hopefully we can give you  a lot of information to help with that college   00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:36.080 selection in college choice and we'll be kind of  going over some of the exciting options that you   00:00:36.080 --> 00:00:44.400 have as a pre-health student at UIC to kind of  pursue that passion so first if you would like   00:00:44.400 --> 00:00:52.000 you're welcome to drop in the chat what um area  or or interest in pre-health you have if you have   00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:59.280 a major in mind you're certainly welcome to drop  that in the chat there or if you are considering   00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:04.000 a couple different options or if you're  undecided undeclared don't know that's great   00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.320 too we'll be happy to give you some information  to hopefully help with that selection uh we'll   00:01:08.320 --> 00:01:13.840 also be monitoring the chat as we we progress  so if you have questions that come up you're   00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:18.880 certainly welcome to drop them in the chat or  you're welcome to go ahead and unmute and uh just   00:01:19.840 --> 00:01:24.560 shout out your question we're happy to just answer  those questions for you and we'll go through a   00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:28.480 couple of slides but we'll also have some time  at the end if if you have any other questions   00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:35.280 for us we'd be happy to to answer those uh so  before we get too deep into it i do want to say   00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:40.720 who we are and who you're gonna be hearing from  tonight uh so first off my name's Casey Thayer   00:01:40.720 --> 00:01:45.840 my pronouns are he him i'm the Assistant Director  of Recruitment and Engagement for the College of   00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:52.000 Liberal Arts and Sciences i'll be talking a little  bit over some of the programs that we have in LAS   00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.480 for you to take advantage of and i'm joined by two  of my colleagues from two of our other colleges   00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:01.760 Mario Diaz from the Applied Health Sciences and  Kevin Price from the School of Public Health i'll   00:02:01.760 --> 00:02:06.560 have them go ahead and just introduce themselves  and and their titles and we'll go from there   00:02:07.600 --> 00:02:12.000 hey my name is Mario Diaz i am the Assistant  Dean for recruitment in the College of Applied   00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:18.560 Health Sciences so glad you could join us  this evening i work um in the college that   00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:23.360 has the programs that you see listed here uh  and you know in a few moments after Casey's   00:02:23.360 --> 00:02:26.880 presentation i'll go ahead and go into detail  about each one of our undergraduate programs 00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:31.920 all right good evening everyone  my name is Kevin Price i'm the   00:02:31.920 --> 00:02:34.400 Undergraduate Academic Advisor  for the School of Public Health   00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:39.200 i'll be talking a little bit about a bachelor  of arts versus your bachelor of science degrees   00:02:39.200 --> 00:02:43.200 and seeing you know educating you a little bit  about what we do in the field of public health   00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:49.120 and so as you can see with just that we  have a wide variety of options for students   00:02:49.920 --> 00:02:56.720 i'm seeing a lot of nursing in the chat looks  like nursing pre-med neuroscience some pre-med   00:02:56.720 --> 00:03:01.760 a lot of nursing occupational therapy we'll  be able to go over and talk a little bit about   00:03:01.760 --> 00:03:05.440 all of those different options and there might be  a lot of options that you hadn't even considered   00:03:05.440 --> 00:03:09.120 and didn't even know was an option so you'll  hear about some other exciting opportunities   00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:14.320 as well as we go through this presentation as i  mentioned i'm from the College of Liberal Arts   00:03:14.320 --> 00:03:18.800 and Sciences i'll talk a little bit about how  it would work to study pre-health in our college   00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:24.480 we're the largest college at UIC we offer over  40 majors and minors and one thing that you won't   00:03:24.480 --> 00:03:31.440 benefit from in this virtual meeting today is to  get a sense of our campus we're literally in the   00:03:31.440 --> 00:03:36.560 shadow of downtown chicago so you can see in this  picture here our campus is in the foreground and   00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:41.680 you can see downtown chicago in the background so  we're very well located uh for students that want   00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:48.000 to take advantage of access to the city or quick  to stops on the train away from downtown chicago   00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:53.360 we have a lot of students who take classes and  then might go downtown for an internship or or   00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:00.240 volunteering or shadowing experience then come  back for classes we're also located just here our   00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:06.640 east campus is located just east of the Illinois  medical district so you have a lot of different   00:04:06.640 --> 00:04:12.320 opportunities that i know mario will talk a little  bit about when he pops in for doing some shadowing   00:04:12.320 --> 00:04:19.520 which regardless of what pre-health goal that  you have in mind will be super helpful as you're   00:04:19.520 --> 00:04:23.760 preparing those applications if you're considering  that graduate level or professional level   00:04:25.680 --> 00:04:31.040 application materials when you complete that  undergraduate degree so to break down a little bit   00:04:31.040 --> 00:04:36.480 about how this works there's a lot of confusion  over what it means to study pre-health what it   00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:42.160 would mean to pursue something like medicine or  nursing or occupational therapy and what would   00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:48.800 be your actual major when you start here at um  at uic and so to kind of explain how this breaks   00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:52.960 down this is a little chart that shows some of  the options that you have we have a number of   00:04:52.960 --> 00:04:58.560 different bachelor's level programs so programs  that students can complete at the bachelor's level   00:04:59.360 --> 00:05:03.440 thank you there Mario for popping that into the  chat you've got a link there if you want to check   00:05:03.440 --> 00:05:09.680 out some of the the admissions requirements for  the nursing program so students can pursue nursing   00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:14.960 at both the bachelor's or the graduate level we  also have undergraduate degrees in public health   00:05:15.520 --> 00:05:20.400 nutrition sciences health information management  so students can complete those programs   00:05:20.400 --> 00:05:24.800 as part of their undergraduate degree and they  will major in those different areas and that would   00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:29.600 be what they would complete their degree in or  we have a number of students who are considering   00:05:29.600 --> 00:05:34.960 those graduate or professional level programs i've  already heard medicine or occupational therapy as   00:05:34.960 --> 00:05:42.160 to that students here today are interested in  pursuing but we have a wide range of graduate   00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:46.640 level programs that we can prepare students to  enter those different graduate or professional   00:05:46.640 --> 00:05:51.840 level programs so how that would work is you  can major in anything in your undergraduate   00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:58.320 field sometimes those different professional  programs might recommend specific majors 00:05:58.320 --> 00:06:02.720 but in las you have those 40 different  majors and minors you can select between   00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:08.320 and you would complete that undergraduate major  and then you would complete the coursework needed   00:06:08.320 --> 00:06:13.200 to apply to these different programs and you would  be able to apply for instance for medical school   00:06:13.840 --> 00:06:18.320 how it works at UIC is you wouldn't come in  majoring in medicine you would have what's   00:06:18.320 --> 00:06:24.560 called an educational goal which would indicate  to us and our advisors that you're in you're   00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:31.120 interested in pursuing that graduate level program  in medicine and then you could select any major   00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:36.400 that would fit or that would correspond with  your interests and your strengths and your values   00:06:36.960 --> 00:06:42.240 major in that complete the coursework needed to  apply for the medical program and then you would   00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:46.800 be able to apply to that specific program so i  think there's some confusion there with students   00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:53.840 as to whether so i want to do medicine can i major  in medicine not directly you would still select   00:06:53.840 --> 00:06:59.200 your specific major and then you would declare  that educational goal for those graduate level   00:06:59.200 --> 00:07:04.080 programs and you would work with all of the  resources we have at uic to make sure you're   00:07:04.080 --> 00:07:10.000 prepared for that next step um questions i'll  just pause there quick if anyone has questions on   00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:18.400 that be cognizant of my time as well but  one of the benefits for students in las   00:07:18.400 --> 00:07:24.480 if you're thinking about that pre-health in that  graduate level program given how many majors and   00:07:24.480 --> 00:07:30.080 minors we offer there's wide flexibility in what  students can study i heard i saw somebody listed   00:07:30.080 --> 00:07:34.320 neuroscience is something they're interested in  that could be something you would study in las   00:07:34.320 --> 00:07:39.600 but we have students who major in minor  in multiple different areas even though   00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:45.840 they're thinking about that that medical   pursuing that medical degree post-graduation 00:07:45.840 --> 00:07:52.400 and one i would highlight sonia gupta who is a  student in LAS who majored in biological sciences   00:07:52.400 --> 00:07:58.800 but then pursued a minor in russian uh studies and  uh because she had taken the russian language as   00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:03.920 part of her degree program here in LAS liked  it really felt an affinity for it and talks   00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:08.960 very compellingly i was just talking with her a  couple of weeks ago about how that helped round   00:08:08.960 --> 00:08:14.480 out for her application and prepare her for  that that next level and make her competitive   00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:20.720 um she also was just named as a rhodes scholar  finalist which is a fairly big deal um as well   00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:27.280 we've had two of those in las recently um and so  that that's i think one of the benefits of lis   00:08:27.280 --> 00:08:33.840 in addition to just the the range that students  have you are given a lot of support here in lis   00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:38.880 uh all students when they're admitted to  lis will be assigned a general or cohort   00:08:38.880 --> 00:08:44.160 academic advisor and that academic advisor follows  you from day one to graduation and will help   00:08:44.160 --> 00:08:48.560 you as you're planning out your courses will  help you connect you to resources and connect   00:08:48.560 --> 00:08:53.840 you to opportunities here at UIC so that you can  make the best use of your undergraduate degree   00:08:54.640 --> 00:09:00.320 in addition when you select that major you'll also  have a departmental advisor who will assist just   00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:04.800 specifically with those major courses to make sure  that you have all of the major courses completed   00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:10.320 in the timeline that you've set for yourself to  finish up that undergraduate degree the benefit   00:09:10.320 --> 00:09:16.400 of having that that specific departmental advisor  is that they are specialists in that that specific   00:09:16.400 --> 00:09:22.160 major and they will be able to help better connect  you with research opportunities which is something   00:09:22.160 --> 00:09:26.560 that UIC is particularly strong in allowing  you to pursue some undergraduate research   00:09:27.360 --> 00:09:32.000 and any kind of shadowing volunteer work  opportunities related to your specific   00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:36.080 major in addition to that if you have  that educational goal declared and   00:09:36.080 --> 00:09:40.960 you're considering that graduate level um  or even an undergraduate level like nursing   00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:47.120 you will be assigned a pre-health advisor  those advisors they're really tailored and   00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:51.520 they'll help you in a number of different ways to  make sure that you're ready for that next step and   00:09:51.520 --> 00:09:56.480 in specific they first will help make sure that  you have all the prerequisite courses needed   00:09:56.480 --> 00:10:03.040 to apply to those graduate level programs or in  the case of nursing to apply to the bsn in nursing   00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.840 or and they will also talk about other options  so they might bring up different options that   00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:14.240 you're not even aware of if you're if you express  an interest in a specific kind of healthcare work   00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:20.080 they might be able to suggest a major or a path  that will fit with those interests they will help   00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:25.520 you with any kind of prep for tests that you need  to take in order to apply to those programs they   00:10:25.520 --> 00:10:29.760 will help you secure letters recommendation they  will help you with personal statements they will   00:10:29.760 --> 00:10:34.560 help you find volunteer experience so they're  really i think integral in the success of the   00:10:34.560 --> 00:10:39.520 students that we've had who've moved on to those  graduate level programs because they are able to   00:10:39.520 --> 00:10:44.480 do everything to help with that process and their  experts in their different fields and can really   00:10:44.480 --> 00:10:50.800 kind of break down the numbers for you as to what  programs are going to be a best fit given your   00:10:50.800 --> 00:10:56.400 program in your area of study and so i think  a lot of students at this stage want to think   00:10:56.400 --> 00:11:01.280 about what's going to make a successful candidate  for these different programs that they're pursuing   00:11:02.160 --> 00:11:09.200 and a couple of things that we've identified that  would be metrics by which you might want to kind   00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:16.000 of judge the effectiveness of your program first  having that strong academic background uic uh the   00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:21.120 science courses and the collateral courses needed  for those programs are very well respected and   00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:28.080 very rigorous preparation for those those graduate  level programs we also have brand new biological   00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:32.800 sciences and chemistry labs that were just  recently renovated so you really do get a strong   00:11:32.800 --> 00:11:38.400 foundation in the coursework here at uic having  those outside of classroom experiences so not just   00:11:38.400 --> 00:11:44.160 getting that 4.0 but also having the volunteer  shadowing as i mentioned being so close to chicago   00:11:44.160 --> 00:11:48.880 downtown and the illinois medical district  students have a lot of different opportunities   00:11:48.880 --> 00:11:54.000 to get that volunteer experience which in many  of the different programs really helps make your   00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:58.880 application competitive having good critical  thinking skills students get the opportunity to do   00:11:58.880 --> 00:12:04.080 study abroad undergraduate research they get the  opportunity to engage in a variety of different   00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:09.680 courses in las which ultimately will make you  well-rounded and will make you very competitive   00:12:09.680 --> 00:12:13.280 as you're thinking about that next step  so i think those are some of the benefits   00:12:13.280 --> 00:12:18.160 uh as you're considering and weighing those  final options uh and where you might enroll   00:12:18.160 --> 00:12:23.840 in the fall those are some of the things that i  think set uic and las and specific apart and some   00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:29.520 of the benefits that it can offer students but i'm  going to go ahead and step aside so that i can let   00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:37.840 mario jump in and if you need any more information  you can reach out to us at las info uic.edu um   00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:42.960 and we'll i'll uh i'll go ahead and address some  of those questions individually in the chat if   00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:51.840 we if any come through so go ahead Mario hey uh  thank you Casey you go ahead to the next slide 00:12:52.800 --> 00:12:57.040 again my name is Mario Diaz i am the assistant  dean for recruitment in the college of applied   00:12:57.040 --> 00:13:03.280 health sciences we are one of 16 colleges  at the university of illinois at chicago   00:13:03.280 --> 00:13:06.480 we are the fourth largest college you  just heard from casey with liberal arts   00:13:06.480 --> 00:13:12.400 and sciences they are the largest we have the  fourth largest college we have classes both   00:13:12.400 --> 00:13:17.920 on the east side of campus and the west side which  is really important for us because we are the   00:13:17.920 --> 00:13:21.840 heart of the medical district and the west side  you heard casey mentioned that earlier but the   00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:26.240 west side of campus is where we have our graduate  programs and our professional programs and we   00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:33.840 have four major hospitals there within walking  distance rush uic hospitals georgia and the va   00:13:34.560 --> 00:13:40.320 we also have over 40 clinics in that area and  so really important for students who um are   00:13:40.320 --> 00:13:44.800 interested in health care have proximity to these  facilities so we're very proud of the fact that   00:13:44.800 --> 00:13:51.680 we offer classes in that space we are a college  of scholars practitioners educators researchers   00:13:52.800 --> 00:13:56.160 who view health more than the absence  of illness disease or disability   00:13:56.880 --> 00:14:01.840 our in our community of scholars and practitioners  and advocates we work to break down barriers   00:14:02.480 --> 00:14:06.320 that prevent access to health and wellness so all  individuals can lead healthy and self-determined   00:14:06.320 --> 00:14:09.680 lives and i'll show you some examples of how  we do that in the next few slides go ahead 00:14:13.920 --> 00:14:17.360 here are our programs in the cadre of  pet health sciences here you'll see   00:14:18.000 --> 00:14:22.320 all of our our departments um  and this consists of 29 degrees   00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:28.400 so we offer 29 degrees and certificates in the  college and here you'll see we have the first one   00:14:28.400 --> 00:14:33.920 is biomedical and health information sciences this  is where our undergrad program our him program is   00:14:34.560 --> 00:14:39.920 we also have disability and human development we  have the department of kinesiology and nutrition   00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:46.160 we have our professional program occupational  therapy and our physical therapy program and   00:14:46.160 --> 00:14:49.920 then we also have a program in rehabilitation  sciences and in the next few slides i'm going to   00:14:49.920 --> 00:14:54.800 go over each one of the undergraduate programs in  more detail i won't spend a lot of time on ot or   00:14:54.800 --> 00:14:59.600 occupational therapy or pt which is our physical  therapy program because they are graduate programs   00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:03.840 or professional programs and you are all you  are coming in as undergraduate students i can   00:15:03.840 --> 00:15:08.000 certainly answer any questions it's important to  know that the students who are pursuing like casey   00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:13.360 mentioned earlier pursuing or have an educational  goal of medicine or physical therapy or 00:15:15.440 --> 00:15:21.360 any any doctorate level program any one of these  programs and that you're going to hear about today   00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:25.280 in liberal arts and sciences and applied health  sciences and in the school of public health   00:15:25.280 --> 00:15:28.800 can be a good fit for you to  pursue these um opportunities   00:15:28.800 --> 00:15:32.960 these professional or these educational goals  of being a doctor or a physical therapist or   00:15:33.920 --> 00:15:38.320 a dentist what's important is that  the program is a good fit for you   00:15:38.320 --> 00:15:41.440 and so we're going to discuss some of  the some of these programs in our college   00:15:41.440 --> 00:15:45.280 and then certainly you hear from the school  of public health and about their programs   00:15:45.280 --> 00:15:48.560 but it really is about the best what's the  best fit for you and we can talk a little more   00:15:48.560 --> 00:15:55.200 about that at the end of my our presentation our  combined presentation uh go ahead please so the   00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:59.360 first program is disability and human development  it's an undergraduate program in our college   00:15:59.920 --> 00:16:05.280 uh focuses on lives and centers on the lives of  people with disabilities and how they interact in   00:16:05.280 --> 00:16:11.360 the world around them now this program um teaches  students how to think critically about how social   00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:16.240 historical political and economic context  shape the lives of people with disabilities   00:16:16.240 --> 00:16:21.680 our students learn how to advocate for people with  disabilities and address and understand barriers   00:16:21.680 --> 00:16:28.720 that they face um lots of students in this program  want to do work in advocacy and education um and   00:16:29.360 --> 00:16:35.040 and health care and law so it's a really neat  program that that centers on the lives of people   00:16:35.040 --> 00:16:38.800 with disabilities next to that you're going  to see our other undergraduate program called   00:16:38.800 --> 00:16:44.240 health information management or him which is a  really neat program that allows students to work   00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:49.120 in healthcare but not necessarily with patients  right so these students will work more with nurses   00:16:49.120 --> 00:16:55.200 with doctors healthcare practitioners hospital  administrators and even insurance and law offices   00:16:57.440 --> 00:17:02.000 protecting data patient data that is  vital to provide providing quality care   00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:06.240 so our students learn from science  information technology and business   00:17:06.240 --> 00:17:11.120 to ensure the confidentiality of patient records  again it's a great program for students who know   00:17:11.120 --> 00:17:17.200 they want a career in health but not necessarily  working with students with patients next we'll see   00:17:17.200 --> 00:17:22.080 rehabilitation sciences which is a system of care  designed to help individuals regain some abilities   00:17:22.080 --> 00:17:28.000 that may have been lost as a result of an illness  or a disease or a side effect of side effects of   00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:33.200 treatment so you'll see our students learn how to  help people regain these abilities kite whether   00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:38.400 they're cognitive physical or mental so they can  give back to daily life great pathway for students   00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:45.840 who want to pursue a career in medicine or  physical therapy or occupational therapy go ahead 00:17:47.120 --> 00:17:51.360 next you'll see nutrition science  it is uh our food science degree   00:17:51.920 --> 00:17:55.360 uh this program teaches uh students  how to be nutrition literacy agents   00:17:56.480 --> 00:18:02.560 and empower students to help individuals make  healthy lifestyle changes our students learn to um   00:18:04.080 --> 00:18:09.760 how healthy eating and nutrition can treat  illness and disease now this is a great program   00:18:09.760 --> 00:18:14.480 for students who want to pursue a career as a  dietitian and you can do that by enrolling in   00:18:14.480 --> 00:18:19.120 our coordinated program which is a one-year match  program so once you graduate with a bachelor's in   00:18:19.920 --> 00:18:24.000 nutrition you can pursue the master's or the  coordinator program and become a registered   00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:28.400 dietitian or you can with your bachelor's degree  pursue a career in health and wellness working   00:18:28.400 --> 00:18:35.120 with individuals our next program is kinesiology  which is our movement science program students in   00:18:35.120 --> 00:18:39.040 this program are taught to help individuals of  all ages optimize their movement and mobility   00:18:39.760 --> 00:18:44.240 so that they can prevent injury it is  a great pathway towards students who   00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:48.160 want a career again in medicine or  in physical therapy or any other   00:18:48.880 --> 00:18:53.680 doctor program and students in this program can  earn several certificates that allow them to be   00:18:53.680 --> 00:18:57.920 fitness trainer personal fitness trainer exercise  and wellness coach strength and conditioning coach   00:18:58.720 --> 00:19:02.240 so many different career opportunities for  students who want to pursue either a career   00:19:02.880 --> 00:19:09.920 in exercise and fitness or beyond in medical  school students in the kinesiology program um   00:19:11.760 --> 00:19:17.120 are able to leave the college with several  credentials of economic value not just a   00:19:17.120 --> 00:19:21.280 bachelor's degree but several certificates and  then finally you have our undeclared program   00:19:21.280 --> 00:19:26.240 which is for students who know they want to pursue  a career in health but aren't sure what major yeah   00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:31.280 so students in the undeclared program have two  years if you're a freshman or a new student you   00:19:31.280 --> 00:19:35.600 have two years as an undeclared student to explore  all of our programs in the platform sciences   00:19:35.600 --> 00:19:40.080 before you make a choice so you work closely with  our academic advisors to help you explore each   00:19:40.080 --> 00:19:47.440 one of our programs each one of our majors and  then you are um guided into a program with your   00:19:47.440 --> 00:19:52.080 academic advisor that's the best fit for you if  you're a transfer student coming from a community   00:19:52.080 --> 00:19:56.720 colleges or already have credits under your belt  then you have one year um where you'll be able to   00:19:57.280 --> 00:20:05.840 sit in the undeclared program before you are asked  to make a choice in one of our five programs um 00:20:07.200 --> 00:20:11.200 some of the uh really cool things about our  programs is that all students are able to immerse   00:20:11.200 --> 00:20:16.400 themselves in the practice and what that means  is that students are able to take the skills um   00:20:16.400 --> 00:20:20.480 training and education they receive in the  classroom and apply in a real world setting   00:20:20.480 --> 00:20:24.880 by participating in experiential learning  ways they can do that is by participating   00:20:24.880 --> 00:20:31.040 in undergraduate research or they can serve as a  teaching assistant to one of their faculty members   00:20:31.680 --> 00:20:35.680 all of our students are asked to complete some  field work hours or a practicum experience   00:20:36.400 --> 00:20:40.240 our students are required to complete capstone  projects and then they have the opportunity to   00:20:40.240 --> 00:20:44.240 study abroad and all of these are excellent  opportunities for students to apply the that   00:20:44.240 --> 00:20:49.120 training and that education that they get in the  classroom from their faculty member outside of   00:20:49.120 --> 00:20:54.880 the classroom um in real life and so um again we  mentioned the medical district and being able to   00:20:54.880 --> 00:21:00.640 um utilize each one of these facilities or one of  the hospitals to do research or or field work or   00:21:00.640 --> 00:21:06.160 practicum experience it's important that we offer  these opportunities for our students to really   00:21:07.120 --> 00:21:10.800 see their not only their faculty at work  or not just healthcare practitioners   00:21:11.520 --> 00:21:15.280 but they're also instructors so i think  it's a really neat experience for our   00:21:15.280 --> 00:21:21.840 students to be able to take advantage of student  engagement and experiential learning go ahead 00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:26.480 some of the resources that we have  to offer students in the college   00:21:26.480 --> 00:21:30.720 of applied health sciences earlier you  heard casey talk about academic advisors   00:21:30.720 --> 00:21:35.040 we have a great team of advisors who will  be assigned to you and will stay with you   00:21:35.040 --> 00:21:39.280 throughout your undergraduate career to ensure  that you stay on track um help you address any   00:21:39.280 --> 00:21:42.880 barriers that you may have and then that you  complete your program in a timely fashion   00:21:43.840 --> 00:21:48.320 you heard me earlier mentioned faculty who are not  just instructors they are healthcare practitioners   00:21:48.320 --> 00:21:53.120 in the field and you have opportunities to see  them in the field we have a wonderful space called   00:21:53.120 --> 00:21:57.920 the academic support and achievement program or  asap where students can attend tutoring sessions   00:21:57.920 --> 00:22:03.600 or study groups um they can go to workshops  and study skills or test taking strategies   00:22:03.600 --> 00:22:07.360 and then we have uh professional development  opportunities out of the space as well   00:22:07.360 --> 00:22:10.960 so it's a neat place where students can come  and hang out and interact with peers um in a   00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:16.960 emergency college experience by connecting with  students who have similar interests as them what 00:22:19.840 --> 00:22:23.920 so you just heard me talk about each one of  our programs and here i'll talk about how   00:22:24.560 --> 00:22:27.760 our students in these programs are able  to participate in experiential learning   00:22:28.560 --> 00:22:31.040 and get some real hands-on  experience first you'll see our   00:22:31.680 --> 00:22:35.760 nutrition teaching garden which is a space on  the west side of campus where our students can   00:22:37.360 --> 00:22:43.280 grow and harvest their own food and then cook it  in our experiential nutrition kitchen over there   00:22:43.280 --> 00:22:47.440 on the west side of campus it's a great garden  that's won numerous awards over the years and   00:22:47.440 --> 00:22:54.880 it's a really proud to be part of that nutrition  program that allows our students to really get   00:22:54.880 --> 00:23:00.960 their hands um with really hands-on experience  with the nutrition garden next you'll see a   00:23:00.960 --> 00:23:04.960 cadaver dissection lab which is offered to our  undergraduate students not many undergraduate   00:23:04.960 --> 00:23:10.400 students have an opportunity to dissect on an  actual cadaver it's really amazing to see how our   00:23:10.400 --> 00:23:15.520 students are able to learn from a real cadaver the  impact or the effects of illness and disease on   00:23:15.520 --> 00:23:20.800 the human body so it's really hands-on approach to  learning anatomy and physiology and then finally   00:23:20.800 --> 00:23:24.160 you'll see our faculty practice clinic it's one  of several clinics we have on the west side of   00:23:24.160 --> 00:23:30.000 campus where our faculty members actually work  and see patients in these clinics the faculty   00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:36.320 practice clinic offers physical therapy services  nutrition counseling exercise stress testing and   00:23:36.320 --> 00:23:41.360 so much more and our students can conduct research  volunteer or observe their faculty at work at   00:23:41.360 --> 00:23:45.760 these clinics so great opportunities for students  who want to pursue a career in health care   00:23:46.400 --> 00:23:52.560 to see their faculty at work and then engage and  participate as well and uh that might be my last   00:23:52.560 --> 00:23:56.400 slide that sums up my presentation there  you'll see my contact information however   00:23:56.400 --> 00:23:59.760 i will stay on here until the end of this  entire presentation so we can chat more if   00:23:59.760 --> 00:24:05.440 you have any questions thank you so much casey i  will turn it over to the school of public health   00:24:08.080 --> 00:24:12.080 all right thank you so much everyone uh again  my name is kevin price i'm the undergraduate   00:24:12.080 --> 00:24:15.040 academic advisor for the school  public health the next slide please   00:24:17.040 --> 00:24:22.880 so i often get asked what public health is and i  think the simplest definition especially for our   00:24:22.880 --> 00:24:27.600 program would be that it's a very broad  arena that works to improve and protect   00:24:27.600 --> 00:24:32.560 the health of communities through a wide variety  of different disciplines health education and   00:24:32.560 --> 00:24:38.320 promotion environmental health epidemiology  and biostatistics of policy health services   00:24:38.320 --> 00:24:44.640 administration global health occupational health  so worker safety emergency preparedness and dance   00:24:44.640 --> 00:24:49.120 in disaster response and this is actually one of the branches of public health as well   00:24:49.760 --> 00:24:54.160 so some of the messaging that you might have  heard about that would be coming from public   00:24:54.160 --> 00:25:00.000 health organizations would be the importance  of screening people for hiv aids and handling   00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:04.800 that particularly during the pandemic uh  promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing   00:25:04.800 --> 00:25:10.640 chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart  disease the importance of clean air water and   00:25:11.520 --> 00:25:18.400 access to clean neighborhoods and access to cancer  screening for women so that if they're diagnosed   00:25:18.400 --> 00:25:28.240 with a stage of cancer it could be treatable  in earlier stage diagnosis next slide please 00:25:28.240 --> 00:25:34.000 so worth noting is that we are different  than clinical health in that we're focused on   00:25:35.040 --> 00:25:41.680 prevention rather than diagnosis and treatment  and we're also focused on the population   00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:46.880 rather than the individual what that means for  students is that we're thinking about holistic   00:25:46.880 --> 00:25:48.800 approach to medicine and i  think that's why it's a great   00:25:49.920 --> 00:25:55.120 choice for students who are thinking about  clinical health in that you're thinking about all   00:25:55.120 --> 00:26:00.240 of the factors that are impacting people's health  on a daily basis the social economic factors   00:26:00.240 --> 00:26:06.720 the political factors the um cultural factors  and everything else that's impacting a person   00:26:06.720 --> 00:26:12.720 outside of what's happening internally in their  body also medicine has given a great shift to   00:26:13.760 --> 00:26:17.920 preventative medicine based on cost-saving  measures and things like that too so it's really   00:26:19.280 --> 00:26:22.640 a great foundation for those reasons for  students who might be interested more in   00:26:22.640 --> 00:26:26.960 the graduate or professional clinical  health programs next slide please 00:26:29.920 --> 00:26:33.840 so we do offer several degrees in school public  health we offer a bachelor of arts as well as   00:26:33.840 --> 00:26:38.160 a bachelor of science i'll speak a little bit  about how they're similar and different shortly   00:26:38.160 --> 00:26:42.720 we also have a public health minor for  students that may be interested in pursuing   00:26:42.720 --> 00:26:47.200 a different major as well as several  mph programs masters of public health   00:26:47.200 --> 00:26:52.240 health care administration master of  science master of science in clinical and   00:26:52.240 --> 00:26:58.240 translational science as well as doctoral degrees  in philosophy and public health next slide please 00:27:01.440 --> 00:27:05.600 um and one of the unique features about our  program is that we're action learning oriented   00:27:05.600 --> 00:27:09.760 that means that we are working to put our  students in the field to do public health   00:27:09.760 --> 00:27:16.160 work with public health organizations it's  a great way to get some career experience to   00:27:16.160 --> 00:27:22.560 get some experiences to reflect on for personal  statements for post educational opportunities   00:27:22.560 --> 00:27:25.920 as well as developing um skills  and working with other people   00:27:26.640 --> 00:27:30.640 we take a team based approach to solving  issues much like we did in the pandemic   00:27:30.640 --> 00:27:36.240 when we're thinking about health policy which is a  discipline of public health working in tandem with   00:27:36.240 --> 00:27:43.840 um community health and educating people and in  terms of the pandemic i think that spoke to um the   00:27:43.840 --> 00:27:48.160 importance of hand washing and social distancing  those educational campaigns as well as mask   00:27:48.160 --> 00:27:53.600 mandates and things and vaccine mandates those  are the policy aspects of how we're working to 00:27:55.840 --> 00:28:01.600 reduce the effect that the pandemic was having  on so we do a lot of work with our students   00:28:01.600 --> 00:28:05.920 they get a lot of public health work with public  health organizations and get that experience to   00:28:05.920 --> 00:28:12.400 really carry with them to the next step in  their careers or education next slide please 00:28:15.280 --> 00:28:19.600 uh one of our action learning experiences is  called field work so this is a semester-long   00:28:19.600 --> 00:28:25.120 experience where our students get an insight and  choice into what organizations they're going to be   00:28:25.120 --> 00:28:29.440 working with based on their skills and interests  we would never tell someone who's passionate about   00:28:29.440 --> 00:28:34.080 community health and educating people and working  with individuals to work behind the scenes and   00:28:34.080 --> 00:28:39.200 collect data that's just not a great use of their  time it's not going to be although maybe some of   00:28:39.200 --> 00:28:42.240 those skills would be useful not necessarily  prepare them for what they want to do after   00:28:42.240 --> 00:28:49.280 graduation so we really try to take that step and  factor that in when we're thinking about field   00:28:49.280 --> 00:28:54.480 work opportunities we've worked with all sorts of  organizations and many of our students have gotten   00:28:54.480 --> 00:28:58.560 employment opportunities based on those  experiences as well next slide please 00:29:01.280 --> 00:29:06.320 so this is the sample pathway of many of our  students it's not at all the extensive list i   00:29:06.320 --> 00:29:09.840 think it just highlights some of the many things  that you can do with the public health degree   00:29:09.840 --> 00:29:13.280 which brings me back to the key differences  between the bachelor of arts and bachelor of   00:29:13.280 --> 00:29:18.000 science degrees the bachelor of arts degrees is  more geared for students who are passionate about   00:29:18.000 --> 00:29:22.560 the social cultural determinants of health  who may be looking at the social sciences   00:29:23.680 --> 00:29:26.960 in order to specialize in what area of public  health they think they would be able to make   00:29:26.960 --> 00:29:32.640 the biggest impact so students who are research  specialists or the public health nutritionists   00:29:32.640 --> 00:29:39.760 or environmental specialists on this list many  of them took classes in the bachelor of arts to   00:29:39.760 --> 00:29:44.080 have them uniquely qualified for these roles  for example our sexual health specialist from   00:29:44.080 --> 00:29:49.680 chicago public schools she took some courses  in gender women's studies to work in lgbtq   00:29:51.440 --> 00:29:57.520 knowledge and also worked in policy  to now is working to revamp the   00:29:58.160 --> 00:30:02.800 sexual education campaign in chicago public  schools being more inclusive to lgbtq youth   00:30:03.680 --> 00:30:10.000 our public health nutrition is my minored in human  nutrition and also communication courses to have   00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:15.360 them uniquely qualified to be a public health  nutritionist advising people and educating people   00:30:15.360 --> 00:30:21.520 on making healthier decisions for themselves  and i can go on and on here there's literally   00:30:21.520 --> 00:30:26.720 a book on my desk called the 101 careers in  public health not at all an exaggeration so i   00:30:26.720 --> 00:30:31.520 think what's exciting about our program is that  we offer many many different specializations   00:30:31.520 --> 00:30:35.840 for our students based on where they see  themselves after graduation next slide please 00:30:39.840 --> 00:30:44.400 um so some of the student support and resources  we have i meet with every student in the school   00:30:44.400 --> 00:30:48.640 public health every semester from the time they  matriculate into our program through graduation   00:30:48.640 --> 00:30:54.080 to make sure that they're reading meeting their  academic and personal goals um and putting them   00:30:54.080 --> 00:30:58.560 in the best position to be successful we have  specialized career services to help students   00:30:58.560 --> 00:31:03.120 with this thinking about that next step and  what they want to do after graduation they   00:31:03.120 --> 00:31:08.480 help with all sorts of skills like resume reviews  interviewing strategies help them help students   00:31:08.480 --> 00:31:13.920 develop a linkedin profile which is a really  important part of the career process right now   00:31:15.120 --> 00:31:19.760 we have a student wellness coordinator who offers  individualized services and events for students   00:31:20.320 --> 00:31:24.560 thinking about wellness and mental health  and how important that is for student success   00:31:25.360 --> 00:31:27.920 we have a peer support  services team that works with   00:31:28.720 --> 00:31:34.320 students to develop their writing and offering  support there as well as opportunities for   00:31:34.320 --> 00:31:38.800 students to hone their leadership skills through  organizations through committee work that they   00:31:38.800 --> 00:31:46.080 can do in the school of public health and  all sorts of different things there as well 00:31:46.080 --> 00:31:55.040 next slide please so that wraps it up for myself  um you can reach us at baph@uic.edu or find   00:31:55.040 --> 00:32:00.800 information on our website publichealth.uic.edu  i think on behalf of everyone i thank you all   00:32:00.800 --> 00:32:04.080 for attending but i think we'll stick around  for a few minutes if people have questions   00:32:05.280 --> 00:32:09.200 yeah we'll definitely be happy to take questions  and one thing i'll just say to kind of jump on   00:32:09.200 --> 00:32:14.080 that end of um kevin was saying there one of the  questions that that came up a couple times in   00:32:14.080 --> 00:32:19.280 the chat that i'll just address here is um what  to major in if you're thinking about these uh   00:32:19.280 --> 00:32:25.680 professional graduate level programs uh and so to  try to again clarify there there will be a certain   00:32:25.680 --> 00:32:31.920 core level of collateral coursework you will  need to complete to apply to medical school or   00:32:31.920 --> 00:32:38.560 dentistry school that will um that will mainly  be your general chemistry your general biology   00:32:39.360 --> 00:32:44.800 organic chemistry potentially a math course  depending on the program and then some other   00:32:44.800 --> 00:32:49.760 various courses like physics maybe an advanced  bios course and that's it in order to apply   00:32:50.640 --> 00:32:55.440 to those programs so students can select any  major and i think that's why we like to do this   00:32:55.440 --> 00:33:01.760 presentation bringing together all of these three  different colleges because you could potentially   00:33:01.760 --> 00:33:06.400 do something like public health if that's an  interest for you while still preparing yourself   00:33:06.400 --> 00:33:13.200 for that next step of medical school so you can  really major in any of those different uh majors   00:33:13.200 --> 00:33:18.720 that sound interesting and i would argue that it  really makes a lot of sense to major in something   00:33:18.720 --> 00:33:23.520 that you will do well in that place to your  strengths your skills so that you can really get   00:33:23.520 --> 00:33:28.560 your high gpa in those courses for your major and  then focus on some of those courses that might not   00:33:28.560 --> 00:33:33.840 be as big of a strength i mean organic chemistry  is not usually a strength for many many people   00:33:33.840 --> 00:33:38.400 but that would allow you to focus then on those  collateral courses needed for those professional   00:33:38.400 --> 00:33:43.920 programs and would really help you be successful  there but as Kevin said we're happy to to hang out   00:33:43.920 --> 00:33:47.520 for a little bit and address any other questions  you can either drop them in the chat or if you   00:33:47.520 --> 00:33:52.800 want to jump in you can go ahead and send us those  questions otherwise you're more than welcome to   00:33:52.800 --> 00:33:57.120 reach out we'll go ahead and drop our contact  information in the chat here one more time if you   00:33:57.120 --> 00:34:05.840 need it otherwise you're always welcome to help or  to reach out by email if that would be preferred 00:34:08.640 --> 00:34:12.080 hello uh hi um i see there are two   00:34:12.640 --> 00:34:19.840 courses within public health ba and bs what's  the difference between those two majors 00:34:21.280 --> 00:34:25.360 great question so the bachelor of arts is geared  for students who are interested in the social   00:34:25.360 --> 00:34:31.200 cultural determinants of health um the key  difference there is in our specializations   00:34:31.200 --> 00:34:37.280 so in our program we have what we call a focus  area so our students can specialize in area   00:34:37.280 --> 00:34:42.400 public health based on their interests and um  in the bachelor of science those are going to be   00:34:42.400 --> 00:34:48.160 chemistry courses epidemiology courses biology  courses mostly geared for students that are   00:34:48.160 --> 00:34:53.360 looking for a deeper understanding of the applied  sciences that's a great route for students who may   00:34:53.360 --> 00:34:58.080 be interested in pre-medicine or epidemiology  or pharmacy or something to that degree   00:34:59.040 --> 00:35:02.880 students who may be more interested in working  with people and looking at the social cultural   00:35:02.880 --> 00:35:07.520 factors of things would be better suited for  the bachelor of arts where they can choose for   00:35:07.520 --> 00:35:12.720 classes in their specialization like sociology  to develop cultural competency public policy   00:35:12.720 --> 00:35:17.760 to be able to speak to health policy and making  that more inclusive and making sure that we're   00:35:17.760 --> 00:35:23.760 eliminating health barriers when possible thank  you and at what point actually student will   00:35:23.760 --> 00:35:28.960 have to select these things at the beginning  itself or so i work with them every semester   00:35:28.960 --> 00:35:33.760 um students have plenty of opportunities within  the first four semesters to change their mind   00:35:33.760 --> 00:35:39.760 and their trajectory but generally speaking you  know we ask we think that students could have a   00:35:41.280 --> 00:35:47.600 an idea of that by the end of their  sophomore year okay thank you thank you   00:35:49.040 --> 00:35:52.880 mario i saw we had a question about rehab  sciences i don't know if you wanted to jump in   00:35:52.880 --> 00:35:59.120 i i just actually sent her the information via  yeah it's a bs measures of science in rehab   00:36:01.920 --> 00:36:08.800 we had a question about an md medical  degree versus doing that as part of a   00:36:08.800 --> 00:36:14.240 study abroad program so we do have study abroad  for undergraduate students and many students do   00:36:14.240 --> 00:36:18.080 receive credit for coursework  for their study abroad program   00:36:18.080 --> 00:36:23.040 and in many times it's even applicable to  their specific major i i don't know about   00:36:24.480 --> 00:36:28.160 pursuing an md overseas if that's  the question post undergraduate   00:36:28.160 --> 00:36:33.840 uh um but our pre-health advisors uh would be  more than happy to talk with your talk with   00:36:33.840 --> 00:36:39.840 you about your options for that next step uh once  you're getting close to the process of applying um   00:36:41.040 --> 00:36:46.880 yeah and we had a question about what college best  prepares students who are interested in surgery   00:36:46.880 --> 00:36:51.120 um we would probably all say our colleges are  the best for preparation but really i think   00:36:51.120 --> 00:36:56.560 the answer would be that you won't uh well  and mario does point out that they have the   00:36:56.560 --> 00:37:00.960 cadaver lab so there is some opportunity to get  that direct experience and i think that's where   00:37:00.960 --> 00:37:05.440 knowing about these different programs could be  of benefit but whatever professional program that   00:37:05.440 --> 00:37:10.240 you enter you'll be getting retrained uh and  they will be giving you all of the information   00:37:10.240 --> 00:37:15.520 and the coursework and the the training necessary  and the competencies necessary to pursue   00:37:15.520 --> 00:37:20.720 uh that career so with your undergraduate degree  what regardless of whatever college you're in   00:37:20.720 --> 00:37:24.960 you're to get that foundation and that's  what you're going to hopefully build   00:37:24.960 --> 00:37:31.760 at uic and then you'll be trained in that  professional level yeah to Casey's point   00:37:32.560 --> 00:37:35.760 that's probably the million dollar question  that everybody asked whenever we have these   00:37:35.760 --> 00:37:40.640 presentations whether they're a person or they're  virtual and i wish there was one major that could   00:37:40.640 --> 00:37:44.720 say you have to do this so that you can go into  medicine so you can become a doctor or sergeant   00:37:44.720 --> 00:37:50.560 pediatrician but the reality is there isn't it  could be anything you want what's important is   00:37:50.560 --> 00:37:54.320 it's something you're passionate about something  that you are interested in and something that   00:37:55.200 --> 00:37:59.120 you really make an educated choice on because  as long as you have the prerequisites for the   00:37:59.120 --> 00:38:04.720 college of medicine or dentistry or pharmacy or  and so on and so forth you can really pick any   00:38:04.720 --> 00:38:09.280 major as long as it's you knock out all those  prerequisites during your undergraduate career 00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:16.160 obviously if you major in biological  sciences there's an opportunity to   00:38:16.160 --> 00:38:18.880 take a lot of biology prerequisites the  time the way it's part of the curriculum   00:38:19.520 --> 00:38:26.720 um so you may not have to delay your your entry  into a professional program um if if you pick a   00:38:26.720 --> 00:38:30.960 major that doesn't have any science requirements  for example but it really is what's what's   00:38:30.960 --> 00:38:36.560 important to you and what are you passionate about  and you don't have to know right now a pre-health   00:38:36.560 --> 00:38:40.480 advisor your academic advisors your college  advisors are going to work with you on this   00:38:40.480 --> 00:38:45.840 um so i wouldn't you know say you have to make  a decision right now what major you're going to   00:38:45.840 --> 00:38:49.840 pick um you you know you that's what the advisors  are there for they're going to help you with this   00:38:51.040 --> 00:38:55.200 and that's one benefit of uic that  you have these multiple colleges   00:38:55.200 --> 00:38:59.840 you can come in to LAS or you can come into  public health and you have the ability to   00:39:00.480 --> 00:39:05.120 do an inner college transfer to a different  college at uic so you have the ability to   00:39:05.120 --> 00:39:09.200 come in get your feet wet start to explore  and then as you're thinking about what's   00:39:09.200 --> 00:39:14.400 going to be your passion i think that's one  great benefit uic is a very large institution   00:39:14.400 --> 00:39:18.880 there's a lot of resources opportunities  for students by virtue of coming to uic   00:39:18.880 --> 00:39:24.000 though at an affordable price and i think you've  heard about some of those good options tonight   00:39:25.040 --> 00:39:30.080 yeah if there are other questions you're certainly  welcome to ask them otherwise you can uh we will   00:39:30.080 --> 00:39:35.840 um have this recording available on our uic-bound  website if you need to revisit anything you have   00:39:35.840 --> 00:39:41.680 our contact information so you're more than  welcome to reach out so i'll go ahead and stop
