From Chicago to Shanghai
Zuriel chose UIC for its proximity to home. Then he discovered the joys of international travel.
For Zuriel, choosing UIC was a “no-brainer.” Not only did the university offer the city’s best undergraduate program for business, its location for a lifelong Chicagoan was ideal.
He didn’t stay close to home for long, though. Determined to make the most of his college years, he spent the summer after freshman year in Shanghai, interning with a logistics firm and studying business and Chinese. He enjoyed the experience so much that he traveled to Australia and Brazil the following year
“I’m a first-generation college student. By studying abroad on three continents, I broke down barriers for my community and opened doors for myself,” Zuriel said. “I wouldn’t be who I am right now if it hadn’t been for those four years at UIC.”
Hometown: Chicago, IL

Zuriel's quick take.
Favorite spot on campus?
The outdoor terrace on the Behavioral Sciences Building overlooking the city.
Favorite free activities in Chicago?
Going to the Garfield Park and Lincoln Park Conservatories.
Ketchup on a hot dog?
Nope. Not on a Chicago Style Hot Dog.
This is me. Uniquely UIC.
What UIC values resonate with you?
UIC’s commitment to building a diverse community promotes a healthy environment that fosters respect and inclusivity for everyone.
What is your favorite place on campus and why?
The recreational fields on 14th Place and Morgan Street because I play sports with my friends. Plus is super easy to grab a quick bite from one of the nearby restaurants on Halsted.
Do you live on campus or commute?
Part of why I chose UIC was because I could commute from home while receiving a great education. My half hour commute to campus has been part of my routine since day one. I usually use this time to relax and listen to music while riding the Pink line and the #7 bus. One benefit of being a UIC student is the U-Pass, it gives unlimited use of Chicago’s public transport system for free throughout the course of the semester.
